Remembering Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

There has been an outpouring of emotion and support for the Royal Family following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

To celebrate her life and 70 years on the throne, we would like to hear about your memories of our longest-serving Monarch.

Contributions will be printed and made into a book of remembrance that will be displayed at libraries around the borough and at our Civic Offices at Shute End, Wokingham.

People who live, work and study in the borough are encouraged to get involved by contributing remembrances, stories and images. All thoughts are welcome and we will do our best to share as many as possible on our social media channels.

We’d love for you to upload your thoughts and photos and please be as detailed as possible. If you are sending any images, make sure you took the photo yourself or have permission from the photographer so that we don’t have issues with copyright.

Please be aware this is not a book of condolences. A book of condolence is available for you to sign at our Civic Offices, Shute End in Wokingham from 9am to 5pm until 16 September and on the day after the funeral, 20 September. A book of condolence is also available at Wokingham Town Hall. An online book of condolences is available on the Royal website.

Jean Gilson4 years ago In 2012 three of us were invited to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. We all worked as volunteers for the charity Daisy's Dream, based in Twyford. After a lovely lunch and a tour of the gardens we all assembled on the main lawn for the Queen to pass between us. Suddenly we were approached by a member of staff who invited us to the centre of the lawn. We suddenly realised we had been chosen to be presented to the Queen. I shall never forget the look of concern on her face as we explained the work of the charity, and the questions she asked. It was if we were the only people there. When you consider the millions of people she had already met over so many years in so many situations, to make us feel that we and our charity and the children and families we try to help were of utmost interest and importance to her showed just what an amazing and caring person she was. It is a day I shall never forget

keith Baker4 years ago I was extremely proud and privileged to meet the queen when she awarded me an MBE. We were all “trained” as to precisely what we had to do and what we should call her majesty. It got to my time to approach her and nerves simply took over. Got to her and immediately forgot the protocol on speaking to her but that had no effect on her. To this day I cannot remember our conversation except one bit. She asked me where I can from and my response was “just down the road from where you live just outside Reading”. She came across with a warmth that I had not experienced before or since

Madeline Hawes4 years ago Wokingham Art Society wanted to create something very special to mark Her Majesty the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012. It had to involve as many of our townspeople as possible. How to achieve that? A deep blank border was left for their contributions to be added later.After much planning & debating, Wokingham Art Society's artists painted a 34 metre long & 1 metre high story of the key events of Her Majesty's reign, beginning with the moment she returned from Kenya as Queen Elizabeth II and finishing with the Coronation Crown, St Edward's Crown of 1661 with the Koh-i-Noor Diamond, with 60 years' events in between.The Diamond Jubilee Frieze was displayed in Wokingham's Town Hall during the week of 3 June 2012. It was a rainy day on the official Bank Holiday, which meant that everyone wanted to come indoors! This served us well! All our visitors wanted to add their little likenesses to the Frieze! In no time, the blank border was full of a crowd of people, watching the events passing by!In 2016, on the occasion of Her Majesty's 90th Birthday, another 3metre long panel was painted, showing Queen Elizabeth in her youth, at her Wedding & Coronation, with a beautiful portrait at 90 years old.This, along with the complete Jubilee Frieze, was displayed in the Town Hall on that Bank Holiday to commemorate Her Majesty's 90th Birthday. The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Frieze can now be seen outside Wokingham railway station as an installation of glazed tiles, double-sided and 7 feet tall, which was unveiled in March 2014 by HRH The Duchess of Gloucester.

Madeline Hawes4 years ago Pall Mall, 3 June 1953. I was 8 years old. As a family, we caught the train to London on the previous day with my 2 sisters, aged 10 & 5, with my Dad & Mum, who was 3 months pregnant with our next sister. It rained.We "slept" overnight on the pavement. Every so often, an entertainer, like a clown on a unicycle, would pass by. It was a long, long night!When the procession was about to begin, all of us children were ushered to the front of the crowd with our little Union Jacks. After about what seemed like a decade, a beautiful golden coach came by, escorted by lots of red soldiers. In the coach was a beautiful, glittering princess, like a scene from "Cinderella", waving to us. A sight I shall never forget.Then an open coach, braving the rain, appeared. It contained Queen Salote of Tonga! She was smiley and waving to us all.Then we had to get back on the train, go home and go to bed. And it was still daytime!
