Piggott School

Wokingham Borough Council is working with a number of schools, including The Piggott School, to provide additional school places, to address the shortfall in secondary Year 7 places.

Enhanced accommodation, with additional classrooms are planned to enable more pupils to be admitted.

Following a review of the current accommodation, the following building works are planned:

A new main hall and dining area with a dedicated canteen space for the sixth form
An extension to the science block providing 3 new science labs and a larger prep room
The conversion of the existing dining hall into a new drama room and reception suite.
Associated landscaping to improve the parking and cycle stores
New netball courts are proposed

Tessa Wotton3 years ago I fully support this proposal. The expansion is necessary to address the upcoming bulge years of children (and new families moving into the area when proposed housing developments are complete). Children living in Twyford who in the past have not received a place at Piggott, being their only catchment school, are journeying unnecessary distances to school and not being given the opportunity to continue their secondary education with their local friends. I also hear from current Piggott families about the pressure on space in certain areas of the school, particularly the hall, which these plans address.

The proposal to improve the accommodation on site by constructing a new main hall and dining area, an extension to the science block as well as creating a new drama room and reception area will provide many benefits for current and prospective pupils of this school. I feel it is a much needed development in order to future-proof The Piggott School, insuring it is fit for purpose when addressing the shortfall of secondary Year 7 places in the years ahead.

Sally Finnie3 years ago I agree with these sensible plans to increase the number of local students who can attend Piggott while enhancing the school provisions specifically in new science labs. I believe this will support children to develop healthy and green commuting habits and feel embedded in their local community which enhances wellbeing. I hope the facilities can be used as a community resource much like the sports facilities now. A local netball court is be a great addition.

Rasha Razzouk3 years ago It’s really essential to do the expansion and accommodate the kids from local area because: It’s very important to accommodate the children from local communities to stay near to their families and primary school friends. kids can walk or ride their bikes to reach out to their school is safe and not too far ways, which will keep kids more active and healthy. Decrease traffics using cars if we want to drop our kids to further away secondary schools. thanks

Vanessa Steele3 years ago I fully support the proposals to expand the school to accommodate the increased number of children in the area, especially given the likely further increases as a result of recent development approvals. This building work is required in order to ensure that local children are offered a place at the school rather than being sent to schools further away which would create increased traffic and separate them from their community.

Sam Hawkins3 years ago This is absolutely essential and I am delighted this plan is in process. The whole community should support this. I would question the motives of those who don’t.All children in catchment should have the opportunity to attend their local secondary school. Why should they travel miles and not be able to walk/cycle etc? A strong sense of community, with the school at the heart, is vital for the economic and social well being of an area.The Piggott School is a well managed organisation and will make these proposals work.

Miranda Parker3 years ago The plans will greatly improve the school for current and future students. That the plans are as a result of the need for school expansion, means that the Borough Council needs to listen to the school's concerns regarding safe routes to school. This means providing a safe way for children to cycle from the south of Twyford to the school - the proposed Bridge Farm development may help with this partially, but the crossroads remain a problem. It also means putting in a fit for purpose cycle track from Wargrave, as the shared use path is a continual point of conflict, and youngsters take matters into their own hands - probably unwisely but understandably. It also means vastly improving the safety of the schoolchildren using the cycle track from Sonning/Charvil to Piggott, and improve the cycle facilities from the main estates in Charvil to said cycle track. It will only be once parents feel their children will be safe travelling on their own to school that the problems on the Twyford Road in Wargrave will improve. I know the school fully support anything to improve the safe passage of their pupils by independent means, and given the likley changes to the road layout on the A4, the opportunity should be taken to look at the issues in a holistic fashion, rather than as a reaction to a rash of accidents that are becoming increasingly likely.

Suzanne Chandler3 years ago Fully agree that The Piggott School needs to be expanded to accommodate the children living in and around Twyford. A multi function hall sounds useful, so hopefully the children will have somewhere warm and dry to eat their lunches, rather than being expected to stand out in the cold! In addition to these works, the school toilet facilities must also be invested in. This expansion work must be considered to accommodate the growing number of residents in the area - not just for the imminent bulge years. No quick fixes please - have the long term in mind. WBC also need to look into what arrangements can be made to improve the local traffic problems in the morning and afternoon. Too many parents are driving their kids to school and this causes significant congestion for the local community.

Frank Wilman3 years ago Given the scale of house building in the Wokingham borough it would seem logical that an increase in the number of school places for all ages and in all schools will be required. I particularly support the improvement and expansion of Piggott School as I have grandchildren in Twyford. If they cannot get into Piggott the alternatives will mean a car journey to and from school which will increase traffic congestion and be damaging to the environment.

Julie Barnes3 years ago I fully support the expansion plans for the Piggott School - this will allow for children in neighbouring Twyford to attend their local secondary school and manage the ever increasing number of places that will be needed to support the Councils housing plans. A lot of children that will now secure a place will either walk or cycle to school and therefore, keep any additional traffic impact to a minimum.

It is needed for the next 2 ‘bulge’ years but it local house building proposed in Twyford and Hurst goes ahead there are unlikely to be enough places in future years either. The council needs to consider whether it can build a new school between Twyford and Hurst (with a more inclusive, non-selective, 6th form) or perhaps open a new 6th form only location to allow more year 7-11 places.

Andrew Roper3 years ago I fully support the expansion to this school both as a local resident and also as a parent.The expansion will significantly increase the facilities, benefitting existing pupils. It will also enable the school to cater for all of the children of both Twyford and Wargrave.Due to previous admission changes forced upon the school (re Crazies Hill) and population growth in the area, without this extension there will be children in large areas in Twyford who will not be able to gain admission to their local school. So instead of being able to walk to school together they would have to be driven to schools separately in other towns, which would have a detrimental impact on them children, the environment and the sense of community as a wholeThe proposed expansion is both necessary and approached in a sensible and appropriate way, and will be hugely positive for the whole community

Paul Bromley3 years ago I have no comments on the school expansion, however serious attention needs to be paid to the horrendous traffic congestion caused when the pupils are arriving and leaving morning and evening. Congestion blocks the road passed the school, around the A4 roundabout and along the A4. and into Twyford. This can add 20 additional minutes to my journey!!If any emergency services needed to use this route it could be a life or death situation due to delay.
