We want Wokingham borough to be a great place to live, learn, work and grow and a great place to do business, and it's our responsibility to deliver the services that will achieve this for everyone.
But like all local authorities, we're facing huge financial challenges to ensure vital services are protected and residents get the support they need to keep their families safe and well.
Sensible management amid tough times
As the lowest funded unitary authority in the UK, with one of the lowest numbers of staff per resident, we continue to review our finances to ensure they're being carefully and responsibly managed in these turbulent times.
We have a strong track record of reducing costs and making efficiencies, totalling almost £29 million over the past six years. We're committed to being the best we can be to enrich the lives of every member of the Wokingham borough community, ensuring everyone feels safe and secure and has a place to call home.
A safe place to call home
The Council Plan sets our priorities to improve the life of everyone in this community. Our team of nearly 1,500 staff provide hundreds of services that link together to work towards these goals as effectively as possible.
You probably use many of these services every day without thinking about how they’re funded, whether that’s street lighting, highway maintenance, drainage, food hygiene, waste and recycling collections, schools, parks, libraries or leisure centres.
We also provide services you might not need right now, or may never need. However, not only are these vital to many residents, including things like social care for adults and children, but this is where most of our money is actually spent.
